Jaipur, February 3, 2026:
On the occasion of World Cancer Day (February 4), Fortis Escorts Hospital, Jaipur organised a special cancer awareness health talk aimed at educating the public about early cancer detection, timely screening, prevention and modern treatment options. Patients, their family members and several city residents actively participated in the programme.
During the session, medical experts highlighted that early diagnosis of cancer significantly improves treatment outcomes and enhances the patient’s quality of life. The doctors spoke in detail about early warning signs of cancer, the importance of regular screening, healthy lifestyle practices, avoidance of tobacco and the role of a multi-disciplinary approach in cancer management. Several common myths related to cancer were also addressed and clarified.
According to experts, Rajasthan has been witnessing a steady rise in cases of oral, breast, cervical, lung, brain and prostate cancers. Excessive tobacco consumption has led to a higher incidence of oral and lung cancers among men, while breast and cervical cancers remain major concerns among women. Lack of awareness in rural areas often results in delayed diagnosis, making treatment more complex.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Divesh Goyal, Senior Consultant – Medical Oncology, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Jaipur, said that the continuous increase in cancer cases in Rajasthan is a serious cause for concern. Citing the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) data, he stated that Jaipur is among the most affected cities in the state in terms of cancer prevalence per lakh population. Cancers of the lips, oral cavity, pharynx and digestive organs are particularly widespread in the region.
Emphasising the importance of surgical intervention, Dr. Naresh Kumar Soni, Senior Consultant – Surgical Oncology, said that nearly 60–70 per cent of cancer patients in India require surgery at some stage of treatment. Early-stage detection greatly increases the chances of curative surgery, reduces complications and ensures better recovery. He stressed that community awareness plays a crucial role in ensuring patients seek medical attention at the right time.
Highlighting concerns related to head and neck cancers, Dr. Jitendra Kumar Sharma, Consultant – Onco Surgery (Head & Neck), stated that nearly one-third of global head and neck cancer cases are reported in India, primarily due to tobacco use and lifestyle habits. He cautioned that persistent mouth ulcers, difficulty in swallowing or changes in voice should never be ignored, as early diagnosis can be life-saving. He added that head and neck cancers account for more than 32 per cent of all cancer cases in Rajasthan, with oral squamous cell carcinoma being the most common type.
The programme concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, allowing participants to directly engage with specialists and gain clarity on symptoms, treatment options and post-treatment care. Fortis Escorts Hospital, Jaipur reaffirmed its commitment to spreading awareness, promoting preventive healthcare and delivering comprehensive, expert-led cancer care through such initiatives.
