Jaipur, 5 April: In an insightful discussion on Kashmir in the Line of Fire, author Major General Ranjan Mahajan (Retd.) highlighted the role of the Indian Army in navigating extraordinary situations with courage and resilience. He was speaking at a book session held at Ashok Club, where he was in conversation with Jaipur-based author and publicist Jagdeep Singh.
Speaking about his motivation, Maj. Gen. Mahajan said the memoir was born out of a desire to document lived experiences and present an authentic account of Kashmir beyond headlines. He noted that the writing process spanned several years and involved careful reflection, structuring of field experiences, and ensuring both accuracy and sensitivity.
A key highlight of the discussion was the book’s innovative use of QR codes, enabling readers to access real-time visuals, including helicopter operations. He explained that this feature enhances reader engagement and provides a deeper understanding of military functioning, especially for civilians unfamiliar with such environments.
Elaborating on the role of the Rashtriya Rifles, he described it as a specialised counter-insurgency force formed by drawing personnel from various army units. Unlike regular battalions trained for conventional warfare, the Rashtriya Rifles is specifically designed for sustained counter-insurgency operations in regions like Kashmir. He also подчерк emphasized that every movement outside secured bases carries significant risk.
The discussion also touched upon the painful exodus of Kashmiri Pandits, which he described as one of the most emotionally challenging phases he witnessed during his tenure. He sensitively highlighted the human cost of conflict and its long-term impact on displaced communities.
Sharing lesser-known anecdotes, he recounted incidents including that of a soldier who inadvertently crossed the border and was later manipulated into espionage, reflecting the complex psychological dimensions of conflict. He also narrated inspiring stories of soldiers from rural backgrounds who displayed extraordinary courage and emerged as heroes in challenging circumstances.
The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, where the audience interacted with the author on topics ranging from military strategy to the evolving situation in Kashmir. The event began with a welcome address by Ajay Singha and concluded with a vote of thanks by Tusharika Singh.
