Jaipur, 21 November. An awareness programme was organized on Friday at the Fisheries Awareness Centre located in the Livestock Building Complex to mark the celebration of World Fisheries Day. The event was conducted under the supervision of the Assistant Director (Fisheries) and witnessed the participation of around 25 stakeholders associated with the fisheries sector.
Assistant Director (Fisheries) Dr. Prem Singh Prajapat informed that World Fisheries Day is observed every year on 21st November. The day aims to highlight the importance of conserving fisheries resources, promoting sustainable and scientific fisheries management, protecting inland aquatic ecosystems, and ensuring the socio-economic empowerment of the fishing community, along with emphasizing the significance of the Blue Economy. He added that millions of people across the world depend on fish as a primary source of protein, and the fisheries sector plays a crucial role in global food security and employment generation.
Dr. Prajapat further stated that India is the second-largest fish-producing country in the world and one of the leading exporters of shrimp. India contributes nearly 8 percent to the global fish production, and more than 3 crore (30 million) people are directly or indirectly associated with this sector.
During the programme, detailed information was provided on various government schemes such as pond construction, cage culture, pearl culture, shrimp farming in saline water, biofloc technology, and Recirculatory Aquaculture Systems (RAS).
The event concluded with the distribution of information leaflets, posters, and other awareness material related to World Fisheries Day to educate the participants.
