Rahis Bharti & DHOAD: Serving Bharat Through Culture, Carrying Vande Mataram and the Soul of Rajasthan to the World

Copenhagen, Denmark

Culture has long been one of India’s most powerful means of connecting with the world—transcending borders, languages, and politics. This timeless truth came alive in Copenhagen, Denmark, as the rhythms of Rajasthan echoed across Europe on the occasion of the 150th Anniversary of Vande Mataram and Uttar Pradesh Diwas. The moment was marked by a special Indian Cultural Concert, organized by the Embassy of India in Copenhagen in collaboration with the Indian Community in Denmark, celebrating India’s living, breathing, and continuously evolving cultural heritage.

At the heart of this significant cultural gathering was a powerful performance by Rahis Bharti with DHOAD – Gypsies of Rajasthan, presented at the invitation of His Excellency Mr. Manish Prabhat, Ambassador of India to Denmark. More than a concert, the event emerged as a statement of cultural diplomacy—where art became a medium of national service and a bridge between civilizations.

Culture as National Service

The performance by Rahis Bharti and DHOAD went beyond aesthetics and entertainment. It embodied the idea that culture is not merely a reflection of identity, but a responsibility—an act of service to the nation. Through music, rhythm, movement, and storytelling, the ensemble carried the essence of India’s civilizational values to an international audience, reaffirming the relevance of India’s ancient traditions in a modern global context.

The occasion itself carried deep symbolism. Vande Mataram, one of India’s most revered national songs, represents the emotional and spiritual foundation of the country’s freedom movement. Its 150-year journey is not only a historical milestone but also a reminder of India’s enduring cultural consciousness. Coupled with Uttar Pradesh Diwas, the event highlighted the cultural diversity and unity that define the Indian nation.

Rahis Bharti: A Life Dedicated to Culture

For over 25 years, Rahis Bharti has dedicated his life to serving Bharat through culture. His journey is one of commitment, authenticity, and unwavering belief in the power of India’s folk traditions. Recognized as the Cultural Ambassador of Rajasthan, Rahis Bharti has represented India across more than 119 countries, performing at thousands of international festivals, historic occasions, and prestigious global venues.

His work is distinguished not only by scale but by intent. Each performance is conceived as a cultural dialogue—an opportunity to present India not as a static civilization, but as a living tradition rooted in values, community life, and artistic continuity. Through his efforts, audiences around the world encounter India beyond stereotypes, experiencing its depth, diversity, and spiritual richness.

DHOAD – Gypsies of Rajasthan: Living Heritage on the Global Stage

Founded and curated under the vision of Rahis Bharti, DHOAD – Gypsies of Rajasthan is a unique ensemble composed of authentic traditional musicians, singers, and dancers from Rajasthan. These artists come from rural communities where music and dance are not professions alone, but inherited ways of life passed down through generations.

DHOAD represents a rare cultural phenomenon—where living village traditions travel directly to the world’s most prestigious stages without losing their soul. The ensemble features traditional instruments such as the kamaicha, dholak, khartal, and morchang, alongside folk dances that reflect Rajasthan’s history, resilience, and desert spirit. Every performance is a celebration of authenticity, rootedness, and cultural pride.

Global Recognition and Landmark Performances

Over the years, Rahis Bharti and DHOAD have performed at some of the most significant global cultural and historic events, reinforcing their stature as internationally respected representatives of Indian culture.

Their landmark performances include the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in London, an event watched by millions worldwide and symbolic of cultural diplomacy at the highest level. Their presence at Formula 1 Singapore introduced Indian folk traditions to a global sporting audience, while performances at the WOMAD Festival in the United Kingdom—one of the world’s most respected world music festivals—placed Indian folk arts alongside the finest global traditions.

A particularly historic moment came during the Opening Ceremony of “Namaste France” in Paris, where Rahis Bharti and DHOAD performed in the presence of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. This event marked a new chapter in India–France cultural relations, showcasing India’s heritage as a key pillar of bilateral engagement.

Further performances at La Seine Musicale, one of Europe’s premier cultural venues, and special presentations for the President of France, reaffirmed the ensemble’s international credibility and cultural influence.

Inspired by India’s Global Cultural Vision

Rahis Bharti’s work is deeply inspired by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has consistently emphasized the importance of celebrating India’s cultural roots on the global stage. This vision recognizes culture as India’s greatest soft power—capable of building trust, goodwill, and understanding across nations.

By presenting Indian traditions with dignity and authenticity, Rahis Bharti aligns with this broader national approach, ensuring that cultural representation remains true to its origins while resonating with contemporary global audiences.

Empowering Folk Artists and Preserving Living Arts

Beyond performance, Rahis Bharti’s contribution lies in cultural preservation and empowerment. Through DHOAD, he has created global opportunities for hundreds of folk artists from Rajasthan, many of whom come from marginalized rural backgrounds. These opportunities provide international exposure, financial stability, and social recognition, transforming lives while safeguarding traditions.

In an era where many indigenous art forms face decline, DHOAD serves as a living archive—ensuring that these traditions are not confined to museums or history books, but continue to evolve on global stages.

World Music Series and European Cultural Outreach

DHOAD’s selection for the World Music Series by the Government of Belgium marked another milestone in its international journey. Representing Bharat under this prestigious initiative, the ensemble toured schools, colleges, and major cultural institutions, fostering cultural education and exchange.

Performances at iconic venues such as the Opéra de Liège introduced young audiences and seasoned connoisseurs alike to the depth of Indian folk traditions. This was followed by successful tours across France and Portugal, further strengthening India’s cultural footprint in Europe.

Copenhagen: A Cultural Moment of Unity

As the rhythms of Rajasthan rose in Copenhagen, the performance resonated deeply with both Indian and international audiences. For the Indian diaspora, it became a moment of emotional connection—reaffirming identity, heritage, and belonging. For global audiences, it offered an authentic encounter with India’s civilizational soul.

Marking 150 years of Vande Mataram, the event symbolized continuity—linking India’s freedom-era consciousness with its modern global presence. It demonstrated how culture remains central to India’s narrative, shaping perceptions and fostering unity across borders.

Cultural Ambassadors of Bharat

Today, Rahis Bharti and DHOAD stand not merely as performers, but as cultural ambassadors of Bharat. Through their work, they carry the soul of Rajasthan and the spirit of India to the world—rooted in tradition, open to dialogue, and confident in identity.

Their journey reflects a larger truth: that India’s greatest strength lies in its ability to honor its past while engaging the future. Through music, movement, and shared human emotion, Rahis Bharti and DHOAD continue to serve Bharat—ensuring that India’s cultural heartbeat is heard, felt, and respected across the world.
